Ryder System provides transportation, fleet management, and logistics services to over 50,000 commercial customers and half of the Fortune 500. The company operates through two segments: Fleet Management Solutions and Supply Chain Solutions. Ryder manages more than 230,000 vehicles and employs roughly 7,000 professional drivers. Headquartered in Florida, the company has over 33,000 employees.
Ryder System has taken measures to greatly enhance the efficiency of its operations. The company is constantly improving its fuel-efficient vehicle offerings and recently introduced its FleetCare and RydeSmart programs that help fleet managers optimize routes and reduce engine idling times. Ryder also has replaced millions of gallons of diesel with lower-emission fuel and now uses a more efficient oil that improves vehicle mileage by 1.5%. Additionally, the company annually recycles approximately 3 million gallons of used oil, 100 billion gallons of oily water, 12,000 drums of used oil filters, 47,000 gallons of solvent, and 100,000 batteries. Ryder’s fleet of natural gas vehicles recently surpassed 100 million miles of operations, avoiding more than 35,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. The company has goals to reduce its energy use and carbon emissions intensity each 20% by 2020. The Ryder System Charitable Foundation helps address social needs and improve the quality of life for people in the communities in which the company does business.
Ryder System’s last corporate social responsibility report was released in 2013, and the company’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors lack gender diversity. Additionally, Ryder faces a recent lawsuit alleging failures to provide minimum wages or proper breaks to drivers.
