Panasonic Corporation is a significant force in the electric and electronic products industry.
The company’s products range from household appliances and audio visual products to industrial equipment and components. In an effort to lessen the environmental impact of its products, Panasonic uses an assessment system, known as the Green Product Accreditation Criteria, which evaluates the environmental performance of products and services across their life cycles. Among the criteria used in the assessment is the use of recycled or lightweight materials and the efficiency of water and energy usage. To date, the company has over 400 “Superior Green Products” that meet the strongest assessment criteria. Among these products are nearly 30 home appliances with functionality known as ECONAVI, which automatically controls power and water consumption through the use of sensors and other technologies. In an effort to minimize its direct impacts, Panasonic has initiatives in place to reduce carbon emissions, waste generation, and chemical substance releases at its global factories.
Recognizing that industry-wide progress can be achieved through forward-thinking legislation, Panasonic actively engages governments in policy deliberations on environmental issues. Panasonic also seeks out consultations and collaborations with leading environmental sustainability organizations, such as The Natural Step. Areas for improvement include expanding the company’s closed-loop materials use.
