Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductor is a global semiconductor company providing solutions used in a wide range of applications such as automotive, identification, wireless infrastructure, lighting, industrial, mobile, consumer products and computing. NXP is a supplier to original equipment manufacturers and its customers include Apple, Bosch, Gemalto, Nokia, Panasonic and Samsung, among others.
Semiconductors are usually made from silicon and germanium and then “doped” to add elements to increase its conductivity. The semiconductor material is embedded with an integrated circuit known as a chip. Chips are used in every electronic device.
Given the prevalence of chips in today’s world, and the significant resources required to make them, environmental considerations must be made across the product’s entire life cycle. NXP has implemented numerous initiatives aimed at minimizing the company’s environmental footprint. For instance, the company’s Kaohsiung, Taiwan site has implemented water saving initiatives that recycle and reuse more than 80% of its water. NXP also uses a company-wide chemical management program which tracks, registers and classifies the chemical substances it uses. As a result of its chemical management program, the company is REACH compliant and NXP products do not contain substances of very high concern. In addition, NXP’s semiconductor products are compliant with the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances.
To manage its direct environmental impacts, NXP has obtained global ISO 14001 certification. While the company reports on normalized and absolute environmental key performance indicators, it has not established reduction goals across all key metrics. In addition, the company’s reporting on its supply chain audit program are vague and stakeholders would benefit from additional transparency.
