Nidec Corporation develops, manufactures and sells small precision, automotive, commercial and industrial motors. The motors are used in machinery, electronic and optical components and other related products. Nidec Corporation is based in Japan.
Nidec acknowledges that around half of the world’s total electric consumption is attributed to electric motors. In response, the company’s research and development and strategic thinking is strongly aligned with developing energy saving motors. Nidec also developed silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, and when compared to conventional silicon semiconductors, SiC semiconductors have lower loss and can operate at higher frequencies, endure higher voltages as well as higher temperatures. These features make Nidec’s SiC based invertors well suited for use in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. The company manages its direct environmental impact well, with the majority of its sites certified to ISO 14001 and the company has set reduction targets for water use, waste generation, electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
While Nidec conducts in-house supply chain audits based on standards of the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition, the company fails to use a third party to verify audit results.
