Alphabet Inc. is a holding company of the former Google Inc. (Google). The Google segment includes Internet products, such as Search, Ads, Commerce, Maps, YouTube, Apps, Cloud, Android, Chrome, Google Play, and hardware products, including Chromecast, Chromebooks and Nexus, which are sold by the company.
Google, Alphabet’s largest company, employs a series of efficiency-driving technologies, including optimizing air flow and increased monitoring and controls, which has enabled the company to bring down its average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to 1.12 (industry peers typically have a PUE of 1.7-1.9). Additionally, the company certifies its facilities to ISO 14001 international environmental management system standards and recycles 100% of the electronic equipment that leaves its data centers. Recognizing climate change as a serious business risk, Google has pursued carbon neutrality since 2007 and has goals to reduce CO2 emissions per employee by 50% by 2025 and to become 100% renewably powered. Google also has a vibrant workplace culture that makes it one of the most highly sought after employers, offering competitive compensation and non-compensation benefits to its employees. Some of these include bonuses, training and development opportunities, and tuition reimbursements as well as parental leave and free meals.
Alphabet has received criticism over its board composition, which is comprised of many long-tenured directors, some of whom have several other board commitments as well. In addition, despite strong information security management programs, Google fails to disclose policies on data retention and does not tell users about government data demands according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
